After graduating MBBS from Calcutta Medical College, the oldest medical college in the Indian subcontinent, in 1958, he worked in the Christian Medical College, Vellore, for about four years as a registrar in ENT and passed the D.L.O. from there in 1964. He completed M.S. from Lucknow University in 1966 and joined the All India Institute of Medical Sciences as an audiologist in the same year.
After working as a lecturer in ENT in the Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, for two and a half years, he rejoined A.I.I.M.S. as an assistant professor in 1971 and eventually became the professor and head of ENT when he retired in 1995. Since then, he has been working in the Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research.
Achievements and awards:
Dr Ghosh has developed some new operations (palatopharyngoplasty with transmitted dynamism and combined approach palatopharyngoplasty for nasal speech, viz., rhinolalia aperta), for which he was awarded the Cooper Gold Medal and the E. Merck award in 1973 and 1979 respectively, by the Association of Otolaryngologists of India for ‘best works in the country’. Later he was awarded the Hari Om Ashram Alembic Gold Medal and Prof. Narayanan Memorial Oration Gold Medal.
Subsequently, he has developed a new operation for construction of a biological neolarynx after total laryngectomy. He has described some original concepts in otoneurology (including the role of paramedian pontine reticular formation for diagnosis of vertigo caused by brainstem lesions), and new parameters in electronystagmography. He has developed a one stage operation, vestibuloplasty, for atrophic rhinitis based on his concept that atrophic rhinits belongs to the group “reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome”. He has also developed ‘Anterior Tracheoplasty’ for tracheal stenosis.
Other:
He has delivered some orations on the above subjects. In addition, he has published over 100 articles in national as well as international journals. Presently, Dr. Ghosh is working on positional vertigo along with a simplified domiciliary physical therapy that is quite effective.
Special interests:
My special interest is in phonosurgery, functional endoscopic sinus surgery, microlaryngeal surgery, deafness surgery, surgery for laryngeal palsy, and vertigo.
